Try it free
Every feature works for 14 days from the first launch. After that, a lifetime licence keeps recording and editing unlocked. You don't need to reinstall: just enter your key.
Azimuth isn't on the Play Store, so your phone asks once to allow the install. See how.
Install help
Download the APK on your phone and open it from the download notification or your Files app. If Android says it isn't allowed to install apps from this source, tap Settings, switch on Allow from this source, go back and tap Install. If that prompt doesn't appear, follow the steps for your phone (menu names differ a little between versions):
Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO (HyperOS / MIUI)
- Open Settings › Privacy protection › Special permissions › Install unknown apps (older MIUI: Settings › Apps › Manage apps › ⋮ › Special permissions).
- Choose the app you downloaded with (usually Chrome or File Manager) and switch on Allow from this source.
- Open the downloaded file again and tap Install. If a security scan runs first, wait for it and tap Continue installation.
Battery: HyperOS closes background apps aggressively. Open Settings › Apps › Manage apps › Azimuth, set Battery saver to No restrictions and switch on Autostart. In the recent-apps screen, long-press Azimuth and tap the lock so it isn't cleared.
Honor (MagicOS)
- Open Settings › Security › More settings › Install apps from external sources.
- Choose your browser or Files and switch on Allow.
- Open the downloaded file again and tap Install.
If the phone says the app is blocked by Pure mode or Enhanced protection, switch it off under Settings › Security, install Azimuth, then switch it back on.
Battery: open Settings › Battery › App launch, find Azimuth, switch off Manage automatically and make sure Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background are on.
Samsung (One UI)
- Open Settings › Apps › ⋮ › Special access › Install unknown apps.
- Choose Chrome, Samsung Internet or My Files and switch on Allow from this source.
- Open the downloaded file again and tap Install.
On newer Samsungs, Auto Blocker stops installs from outside the store. Switch it off under Settings › Security and privacy › Auto Blocker, install Azimuth, then switch it back on.
Battery: open Settings › Apps › Azimuth › Battery and choose Unrestricted. Also check Azimuth isn't listed under Settings › Battery › Background usage limits › Sleeping apps.
Google Pixel and other phones (stock Android)
- Open Settings › Apps › Special app access › Install unknown apps.
- Choose the app you downloaded with (Chrome or Files) and switch on Allow from this source.
- Open the downloaded file again and tap Install.
Battery: open Settings › Apps › Azimuth › App battery usage and choose Unrestricted.
Play Protect warning? Google may say it doesn't recognise the app, because it didn't come from the Play Store. Tap More details › Install anyway. If it offers to scan the app, you can let it.
Why the battery settings? Recording, take me back and the check-in timer must keep running with the screen off. Some phones stop background apps to save battery unless you allow them.
Updating
Azimuth tells you when a new version is out. Download it and install it over the old one: your routes, waypoints, photos and licence stay. Don't uninstall first.
Activating your licence
After you buy, your licence key arrives by e-mail. Use any one of these:
- Tap the activation link in the e-mail on your phone, then Open in Azimuth. Azimuth opens with the key filled in: tap Activate.
- Paste the key: in Azimuth open Settings › Licence › Enter licence key,
paste the key (it starts with
AZM-) and tap Activate. - Scan the QR code: open the activation link on a computer, then in Azimuth tap Enter licence key › Scan QR code and point the phone at the screen.
Settings then shows Licensed to … (lifetime). On a new phone, enter the same key again, or restore an Azimuth backup: the licence comes along.
"App not installed"
An older copy signed differently may be in the way. Make a backup in it (Settings › Backup › Back up everything), uninstall it, install this version and restore the backup.
Questions
Do the maps work offline?
Yes. In Settings › Offline maps, download the map of South Africa and Lesotho once (about 580 MB, best on Wi-Fi). After that the map, your routes and waypoints show without any signal. The tilt gauges, compass, recording, take me back and the Level never need signal at all. The online topo and street map styles need data.
What does "lifetime licence" mean?
You pay once and your licence never expires. There's no subscription and nothing to renew. The key is checked on your phone, without contacting any server, so it keeps working even if you never go online again.
Are updates free?
Yes. Every update we release works with your licence key at no extra cost. Azimuth checks for updates about once a day on Wi-Fi and shows a banner when one is out.
Can I use it on more than one phone?
Yes: your licence covers your own phones. Enter the same key on each one, or restore an Azimuth backup on your new phone. Please don't share your key outside your household.
What happens after the 14-day trial?
Without a licence you can still view everything you've recorded, export it, back it up and restore it, and use the Level and all safety features (send my location, check-in timer, emergency card). New recordings and edits (waypoints, visits, time-lapse, farm, rainfall, vehicles) need a licence. You're never locked out of your own data.
Can I get a refund?
Try every feature free for 14 days before you buy. If your licence key doesn't work on your phone, e-mail us within 7 days of buying for a full refund. See the refund policy for details.
Is Azimuth a safety device?
No. Azimuth is an aid, not a safety device. Tilt readings and the tilt alarm depend on the phone's sensors and how it's mounted, and can be wrong or late. Compass, GPS and elevation can be off. Send my location and the check-in timer need cell signal, airtime and battery. Always use your own judgement, know your vehicle's real limits, and never rely on Azimuth alone. In an emergency call 112 (from a mobile) or 10111. Don't handle the phone while driving.
Why isn't it on the Play Store?
Azimuth is sold directly by Grid 3D, so there's no store cut and no Google account needed. That's why your phone asks once to allow the install (see how).
I didn't get my licence e-mail
Check your spam folder first. Your key is also under My account on the store. Still nothing within 24 hours? E-mail jacques@grid3d.co.za with your order number.
Legal
Last updated 2026-10-29.
Terms of use
These terms are an agreement between you and Jacques Vermaak, trading as Grid 3D ("we"), about buying and using the Azimuth app. By installing or using Azimuth you agree to them.
Your licence
When you buy an Azimuth licence from the Grid 3D store you pay once and receive a lifetime licence: a personal, non-transferable right to install and use Azimuth on your own phones, with no expiry date and no recurring fees. "Lifetime" means the licence does not expire; it does not oblige us to keep developing Azimuth forever. Because the key is checked on your phone, versions you have keep working even if we stop releasing updates.
You may not resell, rent, share outside your household or redistribute the app, your licence key or your download link, or remove the app's notices. The open-source parts of Azimuth are licensed under their own terms (in the app: Settings › About › Open-source licences), and nothing here limits your rights under those licences.
Trial
Azimuth works fully for 14 days from its first launch. After that, recording and editing need a licence; viewing, exporting and backing up your data, the Level and the safety features stay free.
Updates
Updates we release are free for licence holders, are installed the same way as the app, and are covered by these terms.
Safety: an aid, not a safety device
The tilt readings and alarm, compass, GPS, elevation, backtrack guidance, check-in timer and SMS features are aids only. They are not certified or guaranteed safety equipment and can be wrong or fail, for example because of sensor limits, phone mounting, magnetic interference, poor GPS reception, no cell signal, a flat battery or the phone's battery saving. Always use your own judgement, know your vehicle's limits, and never rely on Azimuth alone in an emergency: call 112 or the local emergency number. Do not handle the phone while driving.
Maps
The online map styles use free public services (OpenStreetMap and OpenTopoMap) that we do not control; they may be slow, change or stop working. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors. The offline map works without these services once downloaded. Maps can be out of date or wrong: tracks shown may be private, closed or unsafe.
As is
To the extent the law allows, Azimuth is provided "as is", without warranties beyond those you have under the Consumer Protection Act and other law that cannot be excluded. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and our total liability to you is limited to the price you paid for the licence. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by agreement.
Your data
Your recordings stay on your phone; see the privacy policy. You are responsible for backing up your data (Settings › Backup).
Refunds
See the refund policy.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa.

Privacy policy
The short version: everything you record stays on your phone. There is no account, no advertising, no analytics and no tracking, and we receive none of your data.
What the app keeps, and where
Routes and hikes, waypoints, notes, farm maps, rainfall, vehicle and fuel records, photos you take in the app, your settings, your name and your emergency contacts are stored on your phone, in the app's own storage (visit photos are also saved to your gallery under Pictures/Azimuth). None of this is sent to us or anyone else unless you choose to send or share it. Uninstalling deletes the app's storage; gallery photos and backup files you saved elsewhere stay until you delete them.
Location
Azimuth uses GPS while the app is open, and in the background only while you are recording, being guided back along a track, walking a field boundary, or while a check-in timer runs. Android shows a notification whenever this happens.
Permissions
- Location: maps, recording, compass and the features above.
- Camera: photos for waypoints, visits, fuel receipts, the sighting compass and scanning a licence QR code.
- Contacts: only the one number you pick with the system contact picker.
- SMS: to text your emergency contacts when you tap Send my location, or when a check-in timer runs out.
- Notifications, alarms: reminders, the check-in alarm, service reminders and update notices.
When information leaves your phone
- Text messages to your emergency contacts contain your name, position, time and battery level.
- Online maps are fetched from the OpenStreetMap Foundation's tile servers and OpenTopoMap, which see your internet address, the map area requested and the app's name and version.
- Offline map downloads come from download.mapsforge.org, which sees your internet address and the file requested.
- Update check: about once a day on Wi-Fi, and when you tap Check for updates, the app downloads a small file from www.grid3d.co.za. Our web server sees your internet address and the app's name and version; nothing else is sent.
- Licence: the key is checked on the phone; activating contacts no server. The key contains its licence number and the name it was issued to ("Azimuth customer" for keys bought in the store), no payment details, and is stored on the phone and in your backups.
- Sharing and backups go wherever you choose to send or save them.
This web page
This page counts visits with Jetpack Stats (WordPress.com), like the rest of www.grid3d.co.za: it records the page viewed, the site you came from and your country, and shows no ads. The app itself sends no statistics.
Buying a licence
When you buy, the Grid 3D store (WooCommerce on www.grid3d.co.za) and its payment provider process your name, e-mail address, billing details and payment, as described in the Grid 3D privacy policy. We use them only to deliver your licence key, keep the records the law requires, and help you. We never see your full card details.
Your rights
We do not hold the data you record in the app; it is on your phone, under your control. For questions about your order data or your rights under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), e-mail jacques@grid3d.co.za.
Children
Azimuth is not aimed at children under 13.
Refund policy

- Key doesn't work: if your licence key doesn't activate on your phone, e-mail jacques@grid3d.co.za within 7 days of purchase with your order number. We'll help, and if we can't fix it you get a full refund.

- Your rights under the Consumer Protection Act are not affected.
